Samuel Woodward (1790-1838) was born into a humble background, but from an early stage showed a keen interest in the physical world around him. His aptitude for learning led to him meeting influential people who offered him employment and were happy to patronise the research he carried out in his own time. Through copious correspondence he eventually gained a name in national antiquarian and geological circles, and is perhaps not as well known today as he might be. This semi-biographical book is based on a personal journal he kept of an excursion he made from his home city, painting a vivid picture of many localities and of his encounters with key players in the early development of natural sciences.
